“Like a Cat Scratch on Sunburn”

Tattoo artist Jeremy’s response to what needling my tattoo would feel like.

Yes, I got a tattoo. It took me a year to figure out what I wanted, and no time where I wanted it. I wanted to cover up a scar on my leg, or rather a hole; a hole carved by my father to remove a boil when I was 9. He was a jack-of-all trades, but surgeon, no way!

This is my second tattoo. I got my first thirty years ago on my birthday and I never thought I would get another one. What is funny, this one is very much like my first one.

I am a cat-a-holic! And, one of the zillions of things I love about cats is their paws.

A bunch of those paws with lovely pink pads

This happens to be the same place I got my tattoo 30 years ago in San Francisco.

The finished product! I can’t wait to show it off!

Unfortunately, Jeremy would not take felted cat orbs as payment!

L e O R B — The Metamorphosis Of Cat Hair

Or . . .  how the fluff of kitty cat hair got to be an earring.

Just cannot fit into that bed, but who cares!

We start with kitty cat. Here he is in all his glorious fluffiness, trying to stuff himself in a bed too small.

The Grooming Session

Gaia enjoys being brushed.

Not every cat takes to the brush. Some will swat the brush. With others, you cannot even come near with a brush, they see it and run. Or, you can brush the head, chest and back, BUT do not touch my underbelly and stay away from my HINEY!

Gaia, on the other hand, more than tolerates our grooming sessions. Maybe because he loves to groom himself. Or, could it be, he has what I refer to as “the Orange Gene,” a highly friendly and calm quality found in cats with orange hair?

Yet, every two weeks I brush out his undercoat and go on matt patrol. I love grooming Gaia. I do this on the bed, a favorite spot of his, where it is easy for him to lie on his back with legs spread, allowing me access to that soft belly hair. This is a mutual project. As I groom him, he grooms himself as well as grooms my hand, when it is near his raspy tongue.

And what wonderfully soft and silky hair! which is set aside for future jewelry projects.

ADVERTISE that cat hair jewelry GIRL!

The buzz has definitely slowed on cat hair jewelry.

It has been over a year since my cat hair jewelry found its way to the internet. I have a steady stream of traffic to my Etsy site, not a lot, but more than previously.

So, what to do? … Try a little advertising! I chose Catsparella. I like the site, it is all about cats and the ad won’t put me in debt. First step—revamped my Etsy site to showcase just cat hair jewelry. Then, make the ad. That was the hard. I wanted a binky ad and I never made one before. After “googling” how to make an animated image, then fooling around in Photoshop — voila! — a few hours later, I had my ad!

And the traffic? it has picked up, still not a lot, but it is a beginning!

Here we go! My segment is scheduled for April 7, 2011.

Animal Planet’s anxiously awaited Season Two, will kick off on March 10. The episode I am  in will be the third episode, and here are the highlights:

In this episode of Must Love Cats, host John Fulton travels down the Pacific Coast Highway in search of crazy cat lovers. In Oregon he meets a woman who is on a crusade to teach kitties how to swim. In San Francisco he visits a woman who designs jewelry out of her cat’s fur. He also meets some folks who host cat-hair crafting parties…just wait until you see what they can make! In Los Angeles, John takes his own two cats to an amazing hotel for felines. He also invites inventors to his apartment to show him their new contraptions for cleaning the litter box. Newlyweds who are feuding over their two cats is the next stop.  The couple just moved in together with their cats and it’s not a pretty sight. John invites a cat whisperer over to help. And finally, John drives to San Diego to visit one of the largest–and cutest–kitten shelters in the country.

Snow Full Moon Arising!

February 7, a full moon arising…

This event takes place each year in the dead of winter. The American Indians sanctified this moon as the moon of snow, the Celts, the moon of ice.

And what do you wear to that full moon celebration? My newest creation of course!

A cluster of snow-white orbs of Gaia’s hair, wire spiraled to keep them in place, then attached to a simple neck wire. The wire is stainless steel, and it shimmers and sparkles like snow on a wintry night, catching the reflective light of the full moon.

The Elder and the Kitten

I had two cats for 16 years. One dies. What to do ?

Add a kitten.

I felt this was the right thing to do. But, I also knew I could not just bring just any new kitten into the mix, I had to respect the personality of my 16-year old girl, who is sensitive, sweet, and friendly.

The Elder

Thus, the animal shelter was out. I went to the net and googled cat breeds, looking at personality traits—as the sweetness factor—and found the Ragdoll. This breed led me to discover the Ragamuffin—a cat that is mellow, calm, even tempered, and does well with other pets. I was sold. Luckily I found a breeder that was only one hour away.

The Kitten

We chose a female kitten. Right away she wanted to bond with Ebi, the elder. She tried and still tries today, but alas, it just was not supposed to be.

But, there were other unexpected results. Ebi gained the status of Queen. She relishes being top cat, after being number two all her life. But most important, she is renewed. Luna was a kitten, and kittens behave, well, like, kittens!

Lets get close!

Ebi began to mimic Luna, she raced around the house, played more with her toys, climbed the cat tree—she had not done that in years! And, even played a little with Luna.

The new kitten was a success!  She respected Ebi, which was important, as well as showed Ebi how to be young again!

Baby Gaia

But, alas, poor Luna needed a playmate closer to her age. What to do?

Add a KITTEN !

Hello Gaia, little boy Ragamuffin! We are now one big happy cat family!
